There is no argument that Robert Whittaker is a savage for taking up another risky fight, when he is already due for a title shot. Since his lost to Israel Adesanya, he has beaten Darren Till and Jared Cannonier and is a former middleweight champion. His only middleweight loss was against the current champion.

Meanwhile, Paulo Costa has not faced another opponent after his one-sided loss against Adesanya. He needs to fight someone to get back in title contention, and will face a former champion. The only top middleweight that Costa has a win over is Yoel Romero but has been released by the UFC.

Adesanya has said in his interviews that if Jared Cannonier gets past Robert Whittaker, he wants his next title defense against Cannonier. Unfortunately for him, Whittaker spoiled the plans and went on and almost finished Cannonier. Robert Whittaker is already past due his second chance against Adesanya.

Sadly for the middleweight divison, Adesanya will try to move up and fight Jan Blachowicz for the Light-heavyweight title, so the contenders may need to wait for the current champion on what his plans are. Will he vacate the middleweight belt after he wins or will he defend both belts simultaneously like Amanda Nunes did.

Although it is not smart for Whittaker to face Costa as it takes big risk to face someone as dangerous as Paulo Costa. If he loses he could end up in the same situation as Tony Ferguson, where he was already due to fight Khabib for the belt but instead faced Justin Gaethje and lost but tremendous respect for Whittaker for taking the challenge.
