In an interview during the Vergil Ortiz vs Maurice Hooker, Terence Crawford answered the question whether the fight with Spence is going to happen. He said that “It’s history” and that the fight will not happen.
When asked whether Ortiz is a potential opponent, he said that Ortiz is still not ready to face someone as high level as him and needs a few more wins to prove that he is a legit contender. Ortiz is one of the rising stars that even De La Hoya said has huge potential.
Most hardcore boxing fans would be devastated to hear the news that Terence Crawford vs Errol Spence Jr won’t happen anytime soon. Two of the best boxers right now in their prime at the same weight division not fighting due to negotiation disputes.
In most of the media and fans, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr belongs in their top 5 pound for pound list. So what bigger fight to make than make them clash for a title unification. The fight may not make the most money but it is indeed the fight that offers the highest level of skill.
According to reports, Errol Spence wants to be the A-side in the fight deal because he holds two major belts of the division. In terms of guys that both champions beat in the division, Spence does have better names in his resume. He has beaten guys like Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter which are current top contenders.
Although Crawford could also make the argument that he deserves an equal slice since he has been the undisputed champion which basically means being the clear best for the light-welterweight division. In terms of pound for pound, Crawford has the better say but if we base just in the welterweight division, Spence has got it.
It is indeed unfortunate that we will not get to see the fight soon, as they are clearly two of the best in the division. What is frustrating is that we could see them fight but maybe too late just like the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight that happened too late. Both fighters were out of their prime and showed a lackluster fight.
Even big media personnel like Stephen A Smith and Boxing expert Max Kellerman, have said that this is the big fight to make and it is considering that the Fury vs Joshua fight was announced. Just shows the level of both of these competitors are just at the highest right now.
But as for Errol Spence Jr, he could chase another title holder Yordenis Ugás, who is currently the WBA champion. Spence could capture three major belts that could potentially have a bigger case being the A-side.
