Following his retirement from boxing, Gatti moved back to Canada and took up real estate work. On July 11, 2009, Gatti was found dead in a Brazilian hotel where he’d been staying with his wife and 10 month old son.

Amanda Rodrigues, Gatti’s wife, was charged with first degree murder, and the 6.5 million dollars in Gatti’s bank account was frozen while the trial went forward.

There were too many inconsistencies with Gatti’s wife’s story, and it’s led to years of investigations in the time since. For one, she could not attest to how she didn’t realise Gatti was dead for the 10 hours she was in the hotel room with his body.

Muscle relaxents and alcohol were found in large amounts in his blood, and the post mortem examination revealed evidence in line with a ‘violent death’ by asphyxiation, and also that Gatti’s body had remained suspended for some time before being moved.

The last updates on the case came in 2011, but this year there have been some progresses made.

Skip to page 3 to see the full 48 hours segment on Gatti’s suspicious death, and meet the two detectives who are determined to prove the boxer’s wife was indeed the murderer…
