Ramon Dekkers represents an era of fighting that many of us remember as the golden age of Muay Thai. He is a true legend of the sport, tragically passing away in 2013 at only 43 years of age. Dekkers left behind a legacy in Muay Thai.
Born in Breda, The Netherlands, Dekkers began practising martial arts at just 12 years old. studying judo for a few months. He then switched to boxing. After half a year Dekkers started practicing Muay Thai under Cor Hemmers.
Dekkers’ aggressive style and other worldly power made him a hit with Dutch fans, but it wasn’t long before ‘Diamond’ started to head East, eventually competing against the best Muay Thai fighters from Thailand.
Dekkers was classed as a ‘farang,’ meaning a Western Muay Thai fighter, and no-one outside of Thailand had won any major titles at this stage. Capturing the hearts and minds of the fans in Thailand, Dekkers began smashing their best champions in the biggest stadiums.
Beating Muay Thai legends such as Coban Lookchaomaesaitong and Namphon Nongkee Pahuyuth in the Lumpinee Stadium, Dekkers helped bring a lot of attention from the world to Muay Thai, and the country revered him for this.
