Tony Ferguson wants to stay active…
Having missed out on the biggest fight of his life at UFC 209, Tony Ferguson didn’t have a great weekend. Originally scheduled to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the interim title, ‘El Cucuy’ was left empty-handed when ‘The Eagle’ dropped out.
Nurmagomedov was taken to the hospital with liver pains during his weight cut. Before even hitting the scales, ‘The Eagle’ was scratched from the card. Initially it looked as though Michael Johnson may have replaced Khabib, but Ferguson was later scratched too.
Number One Contender
Following this past weekend’s events, Ferguson was promoted to number one contender. All that’s left above ‘El Cucuy’ is the reigning lightweight champion. Sadly, this may be more complicated than Ferguson would like.
McGregor hasn’t competed since winning the belt last November, and it’s debatable as to whether he’ll fight for the UFC again. Currently engaged in beef with Floyd Mayweather and the UFC, McGregor’s next moves will prove definitive.
Taking to Twitter, Tony Ferguson sent a simple threat to McGregor. Funnily, ‘El Cucuy’ spelt two out of the three words wrong:
McGregor vs. Ferguson?
Although he is champion, Conor McGregor leaves the UFC in a difficult position. Does the promotion attempt to book Khabib vs. Tony again if McGregor doesn’t come back? Really, at this moment in time, they wouldn’t have much choice.
Growing increasingly frustrated with money fights, interim belts and cancelled cards? Well, under the new WME-IMG regime, this seems like it’s the norm.
Ferguson incredible winning streak will surely be tested again soon. Until that time, though, the lightweight division is still on hold. The only two viable options for Ferguson’s next fight are far from secure.
Let’s hope the scene at 155 clears up soon, as it’s a really fun and talent-stacked division. Watch this space.
