Shot Selection

Some fighters have a very rigid style that’s often compromised of tried-and-tested combinations. That’s something McGregor has been eager to avoid.

“Many individuals in the game are stuck in their routine, in the same pattern,” McGregor once told reporters. “They exit, enter, hit, grapple the same. It’s routine, it’s repetition. I feel routine will close off your mind and lock the frame. It is predictable.”

In a separate interview with BT Sport, McGregor spoke about how he chose the Straight Blast gym. That was due to coach John Kavanagh’s open-minded appreciation of different styles. McGregor stated, “he encourages every movement, because ultimately there is a time and a place for every move.”

McGregor has also been a vocal supporter of Bruce Lee’s philosophy to “Be like water” and adapt to any situation. He’s hailed Anderson Silva as the greatest-of-all-time for his ability to be calm and creative in the heat of the moment.

McGregor’s demonstrated his own uncanny ability to accurately pick the right shots at the right time many times, such as against Eddie Alvarez. He rocked the multi-time champ with a perfectly timed left hook. He then followed up with three clean punches in the space of a second. Alvarez fell to the mat to seal the TKO finish.
