The Art Of The Left Hand
It’s no secret that McGregor’s left hand has been a huge factor in his success over the years, delivering many of his biggest T(KO) wins.
With that in mind, you’d think that opponents would have been able to figure out how to neutralize that weapon. In the build-up to his latest fight, Donald Cerrone’s coach even suggested that McGregor, “just has a left hand.” But the reality is there’s more to it than that.
Part of the secret to McGregor’s success with it is that he doesn’t just cock back his power hand and wait to unload it.
“As a southpaw, it’s not the left hand,” fellow UFC star Darren Till recently pointed out in response to the coach’s claim. “It’s the setups from the left hand, the spinning kicks, the faints, the angles, etc…It all draws you onto the left hand.”
McGregor is also smart enough to understand there’s more to landing a knockout blow than just swinging full blast for the fences. He famously declared after his left hook KO win against Aldo that, “Precision beats power, timing beats speed.”
