No.7: Aljamain Sterling vs. Cody Stamman
Tucked away in the preliminary portion of the UFC 228 event on September 8th, Aljamain Sterling managed to perfectly execute an exceptionally rare submission against Cody Stamman.
Sterling was latched onto his opponent’s back with a body triangle in place when Stamann attempted to get up.
However, while still attached to his back, Sterling then reached low down for Stamann’s left leg, toppled him to the canvas and simultaneously secured a kneebar that forced an almost instant submission from his stunned opponent.
The move was so rare that it doesn’t even have a definitive nickname, with some calling it the Banana Split, others the Suloev Stretch, while Sterling himself later declared it to be the Funk Strudel.
What’s even more remarkable about all this is that later that evening, Zabit Magomedsharipov managed to pull off exactly the same submission against Brandon Davis in what was the equivalent of lightning striking the same place twice on one night.
