5. Nick Diaz vs Takanori Gomi Pride 33
Nick Diaz signed a 2-fight deal with PRIDE, and his first bout was scheduled to be against lightweight champion Takanori Gomi at PRIDE 33.
In the 2nd round of what would eventually go down as an epic fight, Diaz submitted Gomi with a gogoplata, but since the fight was in Nevada (as opposed to in Japan where most of PRIDE’s events were held) this meant that Nick Diaz was at the mercy of the Nevada State Athletic Commission; something that would become a pattern in his career.
The commission declared the bout a “no contest” due to what was deemed to be “extremely high” levels of THC in Diaz’s system. The Commission noted that on the test that Diaz failed the number “15” is considered a positive (or failed) test, and Nick’s level was at 175. Dr. Tony Alamo stated that Diaz must have been under the influence of marijuana during the fight, and that this would give him an unfair advantage. This was almost 10 years ago, Nick Diaz has been having this debate with the same commission for nearly a decade now.
