4. Chael Sonnen
Chael Sonnet takes denials of PED use and makes an art form out of it. It almost appears as though Sonnen knows that nobody will believe him, but since creating elaborate lies and making outlandish statements is consistent with his image he just runs with it.
One of Sonnen’s best excuses was his adamant belief that the drugs Anastrozole and Clomephine are legal outside of competition. The drugs in question are generally used to wean people off TRT, or to fight breast cancer.
Even after the commission showed it to be abundantly clear on documents Sonnen receieved that both drugs are illegal in and out of competition, Sonnen just kept running with his belief that the commission was wrong.
“There has always been a distinction between game day and out of competition. And when you’re out of competition, if you’re not on anabolic, if you’re not on illegal substances, if you’re not on a steroid or a performance enhancer of any kind, that is acceptable” was Sonnen’s explanation of the rules.
While the drugs in question aren’t technically PEDs, they are used to wean people off of TRT and are clearly listed as substances banned both in and out of competition.
The fact that Sonnen would just keep claiming that WADA was wrong, the documents they sent out were also wrong, and that the only person who was correct was him, is the very kind of thing that makes Chael Sonnen one of the best personalities in the history of MMA.
