All this talk is about Floyd Mayweather Jr. taking on Conor McGregor in the boxing ring. No one dare think that Mayweather would be brave enough to step inside McGregor’s world and challenge the Irishman in the Octagon.
And why would they? Mayweather has zero experience training in anything other than boxing. He has virtually no ground game and would most likely get finished by the average MMA fighter. James Toney proved just as much against Randy Couture that boxers should stay away from the cage.
Multi-division boxing world champion and former Olympian Vasyl Lomachenko has shown willingness to challenge UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor to a bout, not in the boxing ring, but in the Octagon. Lomachenko issued a challenge to McGregor via Twitter. (Photo credit: Bleacher Report)
Vasyl Lomachenko is one of the most gifted boxers of recent times
One man however, stands to change all that.
In a recent Tweet, top-rated boxer, and perhaps arguably the best fighter in the world right now pound-for-pound, Vasyl Lomachenko expressed his interest in facing McGregor not in the boxing ring, but in MMA.
“I used to win many wrestling, judo, and sambo tournaments as a kid. Should I try fighting in the @ufc? What do you think @TheNotoriousMMA?” Lomachenko wrote in his tweet.
That’s a pretty bold challenge right there. McGregor, is of course one of the most talented mixed martial artists in the world today. Some consider McGregor the most versatile offensive fighter at the top of his game.

For one, McGregor possesses some of the best hands in all of mixed martial arts. His erratic in-and-out movement and monstrous left hand has felled many opponents. When McGregor touches guys, they go down.
But he’s not without his weaknesses. Many perceive McGregor to have many holes in his ground game. The overwhelming majority of McGregor’s victories have come by knockout. And by and large, he’s avoided going to the ground altogether.
For Lomachenko to be effective against McGregor, he’ll have to find a way to get around McGregor’s hands. That wouldn’t be too much of a problem, considering Lomachenko is one of the most elusive fighters in the world. It’s virtually impossible to touch the guy.
If Vasyl Lomachenko makes good on his offer to face Conor McGregor in the Octagon, it should be an interesting matchup given that both guys are stand-up fighters with good hands. McGregor is one of the hardest hitters in MMA, while Lomachenko is one of the most defensively sound tacticians in all of boxing.
What would happen if the two fought?
That being said, there is one advantage McGregor has blatantly over Lomachenko and that’s his size. McGregor is the UFC lightweight champion and lightweights weigh in at a limit of 155 lbs. In contrast, Lomachenko is a super featherweight in boxing, with a limit of 135 lbs.
Given that McGregor has competed as high as welterweight with a limit of 170 lbs. And there is no telling that his size advantage would be huge. Still, it’s interesting to speculate and to analyze what would happen if Lomachenko would make good on his offer.
McGregor however has yet to respond. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
Yes yes yes. Take it Mac if Floyd dithers to long. But Floyd is the money priority make no mistake. But props to Lomo for daring to enter the octagon.
