
4. Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis UFC 206
Back to the featherweight division, plenty of MMA fans had trouble accepting Max Holloway vs Anthony Pettis at UFC 206 a title fight. After all it had only been 5 months since an interim featherweight champion in Jose Aldo had been crowned. Aldo had his interim title upgraded to the real thing when Conor vacated the belt, but that doesn’t explain why a new interim champion needed to be crowned. Aldo had just fought the consensus top guy in the division (other than Conor and himself) in July, hardly the amount of time that necessitates somebody else being given a claim to the title.
The UFC felt they needed a title fight for this show however, so they put a title on the line in this bout. The company had originally planned on a GSP return to headline the show, and a light heavyweight title fight, only neither materialized.
Holloway won the title and then called out Jose Aldo, referring to him as “Jose Waldo”, as in “Where’s Waldo?”. Aldo responded by saying he would be in Brooklyn on February 11th, but now Holloway isn’t so sure that date works for him…
