4. CM Punk Fights in the UFC
CM Punk was a professional wrestler from his teenage years up until 2 years ago. Punk quit a job with the WWE and decided to work towards his dream of fighting MMA. Dana White opted to sign Punk to a multi-fight deal (though like most fighters Punk can be cut), and they produced a reality TV show that focussed on Punk’s training.
The TV show really showcased how far Punk was from being able to compete at a high level in MMA, as he was beaten frequently in test bouts.
Punk’s goal to fight in the UFC was delusional, albeit somewhat admirable. He has no amateur background in martial arts or sports of any type. He does have a background in athletics, as there can be no doubt that professional wrestling requires it. The difference between athletics and legit sporting competition however, is perhaps greater than what Punk expected.
Mickey Gall took him down, beat him up and submitted him. Then Gall called out Sage Northcutt and now has given himself a legit chance to become a household name in MMA.
