Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino, who fights Leslie Smith in her UFC debut failed a test following her 16 second destruction of Hiroko Yamanaka in 2012, when fighting under the Strikeforce banner. Her win was overturned to a no contest, Cyborg was fined $2,500 and suspended for one year.
While Cyborg has not failed a test since her name has always been mentioned when it came to steroids, even being accused by UFC president of abusing steroids. The feared striker was the first high profile doping failure in Women’s MMA and has had to live with the repercussions ever since.
Vitor Belfort also failed a drugs test in 2014, when he was tested out of competition. ‘The Phenom’ claims he was about to apply for a therapeutic exemption for TRT before he was popped, so Belfort was given a conditional license under the assumption that the NSAC were free to test Vitor at their leisure.
Amazingly Belfort was not tested at all up until the USADA took over the anti-doping regime with the UFC. Belfort fought Chris Weidman just five months after being found guilty and underwent no test before, during or after the fight.
Hopefully all fighters tests come back clean for UFC 198 and the doping issues from Brazil can be made a thing of the past.
