The Biggest Boxing Match of The Year So Far is Almost Here… And Emotions Got The Better of Saul Alvarez’s Camp as They Confronted Gennady Golovkin On Stage…

Now that we’re entering the twilight of 2018, we’ve got some incredible fights coming up – at least on paper. In 20 days it’s Conor McGregor v Khabib Nurmagamedov. It’s likely that Deontay Wilder will fight Tyson Fury before Christmas. First, though we have the much-anticipated rematch between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin, that goes down tomorrow night.

This has turned into a grudge match. They first fought back in September 2017 in the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Most viewers and analysts gave a very exciting fight to ‘GGG’. However, Adelaide Byrd disagreed and it turned out to be a draw. Golovkin retained his titles but was understandably annoyed he didn’t reach 40-0 unbeaten.

Then there was the whole situation where Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol, before moving his camp to the USA. Anyway, all of this animosity almost caused fireworks at the weigh-ins last night when the two men finally faced off.

Faceoff

It all kicked off when the two men faced off after weighing-in for their rematch tomorrow in Las Vegas. In the footage above you can see Alvarez bounding across the stage to confront Golovkin. ‘GGG’ stands stoic and cold, like a Soviet-era statue, unblinking and unmoveable.

Passions took over and both men’s teams came charging onto the stage. A ruckus broke out with pushing and shoving and heated words being exchanged. It was all a little bit messy. At the end of it all, a clearly pumped Canelo flexed for the ground and shouted in excitement, driving them into a frenzy.

Grudge Match

There’s absolutely no doubt that this is a major grudge match. Golovkin wants to make sure everyone is left in no doubt that he is the better boxer, and arguably the greatest active boxer in the world. He’s definitely up there anyway.

Meanwhile, ‘Canelo,’ for all his posturing, is without a doubt the villain in this one. If you test positive for PEDs, regardless of your excuse, it’s going to cast doubt on your earlier successes. His reputation has been tarnished and combined with the fact that Oscar De La Hoya is rattling cages in the combat sports world, GGG will happily shut them down.

Who Will Win?

It’s going to be interesting to see whether or not this fight goes the same way as last time – and we’re not talking the Adelaide Byrd result. While ‘Canelo’ had early success, Golovkin gained a foothold and managed to dominate the majority of the fight.

However, ‘GGG’ is a year older (36), and that could present Alvarez with an advantage. ‘Canelo’ is a more technical boxer and if he can fight more in that style he could befuddle his opponent. Or just take a load of horse steroids and run through him. That would be entertaining too.
