Derrick Lewis Has Received the Backing of Houston’s Popeye’s Chicken… He’ll be Able to Eat for Free for the Rest of His Life…

It’s the heavyweight title fight that just came out of nowhere. Daniel Cormier is set to defend his belt for the first time against cult-hero Derrick Lewis. DC is the heavy favourite and that’s no disrespect to Lewis, who says that he just trains for 30 minutes at a time and does barely any cardio.

You’ve got to love ‘The Black Beast’ though. He’s absolutely hilarious and each interview he does provides us with more golden moments. He’s really been maximising the profile that this title fight has given him and instead of doing an open workout, he did a Q&A session with fans instead.

Now, as you can see below, Popeye’s Chicken in Houston have given their local resident their staunch backing. Lewis who famously said he wanted to knock out Cormier for disrespecting the fast-food chain, will be able to eat there for free for the rest of his life – although that might not be very long if he keeps eating their chicken.

Incredible Deal

Conor McGregor can get stuffed with his Proper Twelve whiskey. This is the deal fans have been waiting for. If Lewis beats Cormier this weekend, fans will be able to eat for free for two hours, in a piece of genius marketing by the Houston branch of Popeye’s Chicken.

“Adding another layer to the fast-food war brewing heading into the UFC 230, Derrick Lewis’ manager Malki Kawa tells me Popeyes Chicken took notice of [Derrick Lewis] defending its honor and have struck a deal with him heading into this weekend’s fight. Details to come,” Ariel Helwani Tweeted on Wednesday.”

Trash Talk

While Lewis and DC have been on good terms in the past, even sitting next to each other at press conferences, fighting brings out a different level of intensity. Lewis threw some shade at the champion when he brought Jon Jones’s name into the equation.

“I think he’s scared to fight Jones, the guy beat him twice,” Lewis told MMA Junkie. “The reason I think he took the fight with me is because Jon Jones was already fighting. They’re already saying he’s basically scared to fight Jones right now, anyway. He feels like it would be perfect to fight a guy like me that don’t have as much skills on short notice before the Jones fight and he thinks it’s going to be an easy fight for him.”

Opportunity

This is a massive opportunity for Lewis. Nobody expected this fight to be made. A few months ago it looked like Cormier would be defending his title against Brock Lesnar. Now nobody knows what is happening there. And then when you throw the whole Jon Jones situation into the mix, the UFC is taking a massive financial risk by throwing Cormier in against a man who could knock out an elephant.

Yes, DC is a much better technically. He’ll try and take Lewis down as quickly as possible. But one punch from Lewis and it’s lights out. We just can’t wait for the post-fight interview.
