In One of the Most Bizarre Moments You’ll Ever See in an Octagon, Jarred Brooks Managed to Slam Himself Out, at UFC Utica…

This was just weird. Jarred ‘The Monkey God’ Brooks was fighting Jose ‘Shorty’ Torres at UFC Utica, New York last night, in a flyweight match-up. In one of the most bizarre sequences you’ll ever see, Brooks managed to knock himself out.

There are very few finishes in MMA more dramatic than a slam KO. We saw Gabriel Benitez get one the other week in Chile. The most memorable moment of Charlie Ward’s, Conor McGregor’s bodyguard, UFC career was when he was slam finished by Galore Bofando in Glasgow.

Sometimes though, finishes go wrong – with unintentionally humiliating results. So ‘The Monkey God’ found out after he managed to end up on the wrong side of his own knockout attempt. He almost deserves it for that nickname. Brooks definitely came up with it himself.

Bizarre

The fight definitely wasn’t meant to end that way. Brooks definitely had the upper hand in the fight up until that point. He dominated the first round, putting together some solid combinations. He even dropped Torres with a spinning back fist. It all looked like the fight was going in one direction.

Round two started with more of the same. ‘The Monkey God’ came out strong. He landed some hard shots. Torres went for Brook’s back, but he managed to get free. Then came the glorious, ridiculous slam. He picked him up and went to smash him off the canvas, but somehow ended up underneath and taking the brunt of the impact himself.

Torres went for the ground and pound just to be sure the American was knocked out cold. He definitely was. That’s one of the weirdest finishes to a fight that you will ever see. The official result was TKO by self-slam and punches at 2.55 of the first round.

Weird Card

It was a card with a remarkable lack of star power, even by fight night standards. The main event saw Marlon Moraes take on Jimmie Rivera in a genuinely high-level clash of bantamweights. However, that fight would only last for 33 seconds, after ‘Magic’ nearly decapitated his Puerto Rican opponent with a vicious head kick.

No UFC event would be worthy of the name if it didn’t have a fight canceled for some stupid reason. Although all the fighters made weight – only the fourth time this has happened this year – Jessica Aguilar’s fight against Jodie Esquibel was pulled because Aguilar had chapped lips. Who even knows what that means?
