Well, you can’t say he’s boring… Greg Hardy provided more drama in Boston after using an inhaler…

Greg Hardy just can’t avoid controversy. The former footballer has failed to win over UFC fans who can’t get past his history of domestic violence. To make matters worse, he was disqualified on his promotional debut. For some reason, the UFC seems to think he has major star potential because they’ve been placing him very high on their cards.

However, this is just exposing him to pressure that he’s just not ready for at this stage of his career. Now he’s in the headlines again after using an inhaler between rounds 2 and 3 of his unanimous decision win over Ben Sosoli. The result was changed to a no-contest after an investigation.

Check out the footage below of Hardy using the inhaler. He has protested his innocence in the situation. However, the UFC has that it was totally illegal. Nothing about Hardy’s UFC journey has been straightforward so far.

Permission Granted?

The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission follows WADA anti-doping rules. Inhalers are classed as beta-2 antagonists. Therefore they are illegal at all times unless pre-approved by the commission. However, Hardy insists that he got permission from an official in the octagon. Even so, this would not be enough because the approval needs to come beforehand.

“I was in the ring, me and my coach asked the commission if it would be OK to use my inhaler and they said yes, so I took it,” Hardy said afterwards. “I’m still new guy in this sport. I did what I do in every situation – I asked permission, I got permission and I did what I was told.”

You would almost feel sorry for him.

What Happened?

After the fight, Dana White revealed his bemusement at the situation. The UFC president blames Hardy’s corner more than the fighter. In fairness to Hardy, he was in the middle of a fight and in the moment. However, his experienced corner should have known much better. That lack of attention has cost their fighter.

I think if you watch it, you can understand how it happened,” White said. “I don’t even know what to say. First of all, Din Thomas, come on Din, you’ve been in this game forever. His corner, they’ve got to know you can’t use an inhaler in the corner. They should know that. Shouldn’t even be a question.”

The team insist that they’re going to appeal the decision. Best of luck with that. It was completely illegal.

Elsewhere

Elsewhere on the card, there were a number of exciting fights. Dominick Reyes brutally finished Chris Weidman in the first round of the main event. It was Weidman’s light-heavyweight debut, but his chin just wasn’t able for it. Before that, Jeremy Stephens dropped a decision to Yair Rodriguez.

This was a genuine grudge match and won fight-of-the-night honours. Stephens took a brutal liver shot early but was able to bounce back and stay in the contest. In the end, Rodriguez had done enough to outpoint him. Meanwhile, Maycee Barber continued her rise with an emphatic victory. She called out Paige VanZant after a one-sided victory over Gillian Robertson.
