Much has been said, positive and negative, about the UFC 205 main event. Coming at a time when the UFC’s ownership changed hands, the lightweight title clash has been hotly debated. Going forward, it looks like money will be taking primacy over rankings.

Buying the promotion for a staggering $4.2 billion USD, WME-IMG are well known in the entertainment business. Following the recent model of making big money fights, Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor was the obvious choice. Not that everyone was happy, though.

Does McGregor Deserve Lightweight Shot?

Maybe he is undeserving but did anyone expect anything different? The UFC is all about making money, although not necessarily from a fighter’s perspective. Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo were among the angriest featherweights, but the lightweight division was also pretty frustrated.

Khabib Nurmagomedov was furious about UFC 205. Many other fighters appealed that ‘The Notorious’ hadn’t even fought at 155, let alone deserved a title fight. Still, the fight was made, and McGregor wants to make history. He is also hoping to repeat it.

When Conor McGregor was still relatively unknown to the MMA world, he fought for Cage Warriors Fighting Championship. CWFC is one of the biggest promotions on the European MMA scene, and they saw the talent in McGregor.

Although the Irishman lost a few along the way, he eventually found himself fighting for and winning the featherweight belt. Next up was the lightweight title, as McGregor hoped to become the first in CWFC history to hold both belts at the same time. Sound familiar?
