Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was once described as ‘the most dominant athlete alive.’ It was during a time when ‘Rowdy’ was smashing opponents quicker than it takes to make a cup of coffee, and she was receiving some very high praise.
Joe Rogan was famously close to tears after Rousey knocked out Bethe Correia at UFC 190. The UFC commentator described her as ‘just a very special, once in a lifetime fighter,’ and said it was ‘an honor’ to watch her fight.
With such high expectations from her fans and millions spent on promoting Rousey by the UFC, the heavy favorite Ronda Rousey was expected to steamroll Holly Holm at UFC 193. Once again Joe Rogan was stoking the fire.
During one of his podcasts Rogan said he didn’t think it was fair to put Holm in against Rousey, but acknowledged it was probably because of a ‘lack of contenders at bantamweight.’
It was also around this time that certain people, including UFC president Dana White, were saying that Ronda could beat the boxing great Floyd Mayweather. With all the accolades came a spot on the cover of ‘Ring Magazine,’ something that shocked and appalled many boxing purists.
Then came fight night at UFC 193, and Holm’s boxing simply undid everything ‘Rowdy’ was all about. It sparked a heated debate and a ton of criticism. So has she worked to change the ‘poor’ striking that everyone was hating on?
