UFC lightweight prospect Sage Northcutt came in to the promotion in October of last year with great expectations. He had been featured on Dana White’s ‘Lookin’ for a fight’ reality show, instantly grabbing the attention of mixed martial arts fans, both casual and hardcore.

His athleticism, boyish good looks and raw talent at the age of just 20 made Northcutt a big hit instantly. The promotion wasted no time in putting some money behind ‘Super’ Sage, and his first two fights under the Zuffa banner did not disappoint.

His first fight in the UFC was a convincing finish over Francisco Trevino, and another squash match win against Cody Pfister led to a UFC on FOX 18 booking against Andrew Holbrook. Last minute replacement Bryan Barberena meant Northcutt would instead fight at welterweight, 15 pounds above his usual weight class.

The fight would not go his way, as Barberena upset ‘Super’ Sage with a von flue choke on just over one week’s notice.

The exciting youth was bludgeoned by the massive underdog Barberena, but it wasn’t long before he was scheduled to fight Enrique Martin at UFC 200. Then came the can of wors that was opened today by a simple sparring session.
