Women’s mixed martial arts has risen from a relatively taboo sector of the sport, to now beginning to rival men’s MMA in terms of talent, exposure and marketability. Most of this is thanks to Ronda Rousey pioneering the way, but she is rapidly becoming ‘old hat’ on the WMMA scene.

Since her crazy knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193, the first real pay-per-view draw from women’s mixed martial arts has taken a step back. Even though that was just seven months ago, so much has changed in that time.

UFC 196: Holm v Tate

Miesha Tate defeated Holly Holm in ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’s’ first attempted title defense at UFC 195. The victory showed not only how much Tate had improved, but also furthered the point that WMMA is not a one-horse race.

For all the firsts and record breaking action we’ve seen from women’s MMA in the last few years, perhaps the subject of today’s article has never been seen before.
