Could the unthinkable happen again? UFC star Conor McGregor made the leap to the boxing ring last year to compete against Floyd Mayweather. After a strange week of social media activity, it seems ‘Money’ might jump into the UFC octagon next…
Most believed it would never happen when talks of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor started a few years back. ‘The Notorious’ had just ascended to the featherweight title at the time, and the trash talk appeared to be just for publicity.
As time went on, Mayweather retired on top and McGregor continued his rise to global fame. Although he lost a UFC 196 welterweight clash with Nate Diaz, ‘The Notorious’ continued on to win the UFC lightweight title.
Suddenly the Mayweather fight was becoming a reality, booked in for August 2017 against all odds. McGregor was unsuccessful, schooled by the far superior boxer, to the surprise of very few in the fight game.
Mayweather to UFC?
This week has been a strange one, with ‘Money’ teasing a debut in the UFC octagon on social media. During a couple of brief clips, Mayweather can be seen warming up in an MMA cage, much to the delight of the internet trolls.
UFC president Dana White recently confirmed ‘crazy’ Mayweather was seriously in talks to join the promotion.Although he’s since redacted those words, ‘Money’ re-stoked that fire with his trolling this week.
In response, McGregor has said it’s time for the boxing great to man up and join the UFC:
“I’d do as I’d please against him inside the Octagon,” McGregor said, speaking with Adam Glyn (H/T TheMacLife.com). “If he does do it — I know he’s flirting with it — I’d have respect for him. I think it would get his earned respect then if he was to step in. He’s engaging, we’re engaging, so we’ll see. I’m currently in negotiations to face my next opponent and we have many options.
“There’s the current interim lightweight champion, there’s an undefeated Dagistani, there may be a big Russian event. There’s obviously the Diaz trilogy, of course the Mayweather fight is there. We’re just at the table at the moment. Times is good, life is good.”
Here’s one of the Mayweather MMA posts, followed by McGregor’s ultimatum:

“If it is [for publicity], it will follow him for the rest of his days,” McGregor said. “If it is, it will follow him for the rest of his days that he did not do it. I said I would do it, and I stepped up and I done it. His time now. His go now.”
“Best not miss” is an interesting tagline for that post considering McGregor would have a full arsenal to throw at Mayweather this time. Are we all being honey d!cked again? Probably, because after all ‘Money’ would stand less than zero chance in a UFC octagon.
