With updates on the bout that the entire world is waiting to hear confirmation from, things are starting to get interesting between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and boxing pound-for-pound elite Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather edge closer to a boxing superfight by the day…

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor have a fight date and venue

Although in actual competition terms, McGregor isn’t expected to give Mayweather any problems in the ring. The entertainment value stems from the two athletes’ uncanny ability to self-promote their fights with unparalleled flair. Both McGregor and Mayweather drum up huge hype generated from press conferences, media junkets and public appearances. They are both masters at the art of promoting their fights.

And that’s the intrinsic value of this whole Mayweather-McGregor mess. For better or for worse, we appear to be stuck with a bout no one expects to be even closely competitive.

Regardless of the disparity in boxing skill however, McGregor reiterates that he plans to shock the world if given the chance to face Mayweather in the ring. McGregor and the UFC have already agreed to a deal, and Dana White has signed off on the bout. With a date and venue in place, seemingly only Mayweather’s end of the equation needs to be finalized.

In a recent dig at Mayweather on Instagram, McGregor posted a picture of the boxing superstar after a training session.

Man, much respect to Floyd Senior still getting a few rounds in at the gym. I hope I can still train at that age. Respect.

Conor McGregor takes a dig at Mayweather on Instagram

“Man, much respect to Floyd Senior still getting a few rounds in at the gym. I hope I can still train at that age. Respect,” McGregor said in his post.

Only it wasn’t Floyd Mayweather Sr. in the photo, it was “Money” May himself.

McGregor is obviously alluding to the fact that Mayweather, now 40 years of age, is too old for the fight game. And will have difficulty facing a younger fighter in his prime, especially one with dangerous hands like the Irishman.

Even sports analysts around the world know that McGregor’s only window at beating Mayweather is the off chance that he shows up to the fight looking like his age. Mayweather hasn’t fought since his conquest of Andre Berto in 2015. That’s nearly two years ago, so age and ring rust will definitely play a factor.

Although Mayweather does tend to keep in shape even though he doesn’t fight for long periods of time.

Nevertheless, it appears both McGregor and Mayweather are in training now. And if August is indeed the date, then they should both be ready to go by then. It’s a fight not many are really interested in seeing if not for the fact that both guys are very entertaining to watch.

In all honesty, everyone knows pretty much what will happen and that’s Mayweather boxing McGregor’s socks off. Given what we know now, do you think the fight will happen this August? Chime in your opinions in the comments section.
