Conor McGregor ‘retired’ but nobody believes him. Not even UFC President Dana White. The bald one’s relationship with ‘The Notorious’ is volatile. First of all, McGregor is a cash cow. Even if you hate him, you’ll definitely tune in and watch him compete.
However, the Irishman is also extremely controversial in his actions. After multiple arrests and unsavory incidents, there is definitely an edge to their dealings. But White is still willing to milk that cash cow while it’s still active. That’s why he hasn’t closed the door on Irishman, unlike other lesser names.
In short, he signaled that McGregor will return sooner rather than later. In an interview with ESPN, the UFC President gave his thoughts on the Irishman’s unique situation. Who would you like to see ‘The Notorious’ fight next?

One of the Best
White acknowledged that McGregor basically does what he wants. When you have millions of dollars in the bank, it’s easy to be independent. Most UFC fighters can’t imagine the amount of wealth that the former two-weight champion has in his bank account. However, fighting is his main platform and source of wealth. That’s why White believes that McGregor will return next year.
“There’s no doubt that Conor McGregor’s one of the best in the world,” White said. “What’s going on with Conor McGregor is what goes on with all professional fighters when they become extremely wealthy and Conor McGregor is rich.
“He gets to pick and choose what he wants to do now and he’s at that point in his career where he’s got a few fights left. As of right now, he’s retired. I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out and wanted to fight somebody next year after all these different fights play out.”

Highlight
Recently, Coach John Kavanagh told fans what he thinks about his star pupil’s situation. In short, the SBG Ireland head trainer says that a McGregor v Gaethje fight would be amazing. He also thinks that it would be a great stylistic match-up for ‘The Notorious’ because of the way Gaethje comes forward. He said:
“Three fights I would like to see, I’ll give you my top three. It would be Gaethje, I would love that fight, it would be awesome. Diaz, the trilogy, and the Khabib rematch.”
“I think the Gaethje fight is probably the best fight I could imagine because he has the style that really matches well with Conor,” Kavanagh continued. “Gaethje likes to march forward. He sits down on his shots, he throws heavy shots. He doesn’t seem to care about being hit, he likes coming forward. Conor’s always done very well as a counter fighter. Although he does walk forward, he responds to people’s attacks very well.”

Close
Furthermore, Kavanagh said that they almost made the fight. However, it fell apart for two reasons. First of all, McGregor does not see himself as a backup fighter. Meanwhile, the UFC also doesn’t want to book him without a live crowd.
“It was close to being done,” Kavanagh claimed. “It’s kinda sad now that it didn’t happen. We have obviously the coronavirus and how everything went with the world. I think we could’ve been getting ready for that fight any week now if things hadn’t have happened the way they did. But here we are, so all we can do is speculate.”
Now with Khabib’s status uncertain after the tragic passing of his father, an opportunity may open for McGregor. Who knows what will happen in the UFC?
