Um, don’t think that’s a good reason really….
Ever wondered why some sports pay ridiculous amounts of money to their athletes? A lot of the time it’s due to the sheer amount the organizations themselves make from the stars in question.
When you look at established sports like pro football, baseball, basketball and boxing, the overall benefits to the promoters and TV stations are truly huge. When you see a NFL player sign a multi million per year contract, it’s because he is signing up to a multi-billion dollar profit making machine.
Here’s an interesting look at the salary cap for the 2015 season in the National Football League. Quite the staggering number when you realise the NFL themselves and their associated networks make 10 times that total amount.
So why don’t MMA fighters get paid that amount of money?

Conor McGregor earned $1 Million at UFC 196 (disclosed salary) and is currently signed to a lucrative $10 million contract. Most UFC fighters make decidedly less. The median average pay per fight is $24,500, and most fighters are active only a couple of times per annum. Some fighters think the muscle of a union might help them get better pay and more say.
So Conor McGregor is obviously leading the pack right now in MMA and the UFC, but why? Why do the rest of the fighters have to scratch around like bums for pocket change?
