Dana White: “Khabib v McGregor 2 is Absolutely Possible”

This Will be Poison to Tony Ferguson’s Ears… Dana White Has Said the Words That We Have All Feared… Khabib Nurmagamedov v Conor McGregor 2 is ‘Absolutely Possible’…

Even though we’re going to get a load of comments saying ‘who cares,’ when we write about Conor McGregor, there’s still no doubt that he has the biggest drawing power in the UFC. That’s despite fighting just once in MMA in the last four years, a brutal, unforgiving loss to the Russian lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagamedov.

Khabib is set to take on interim champion Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi. ‘The Diamond’ is extremely tough and an excellent boxer. But Khabib is justifiably the overwhelming favourite with an unbeaten record of 27-0. He’s never been tested inside or outside the UFC.

Now Dana White has been asked about what the future holds for his 155lb king. And there is a real chance that Conor McGregor could skip the line again and fight for that title.

Interesting

Bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight are arguably the most talent-rich divisions on the entire roster. The latter is especially laden with killers. White listed them off and explained how anyone of them could find themselves with a title shot in the near future. He told Rich Eisen:

“It’s a very interesting division because you have Khabib, you have Tony Ferguson, Conor McGregor, Donald Cerrone’s in the mix, Justin Gaethje – there’s just so many unbelievable fights in that weight class and Khabib keeps talking about fighting Georges St. Pierre again,” White said. “St-Pierre retired but when St-Pierre retired, he retired basically saying I won’t if I can fight Khabib. So there’s so many different, crazy, interesting things that we can do at that weight class.”

Movement

While almost everybody in MMA believes that Tony Ferguson is the man with the strongest claim to the next title shot – because he does – the UFC President is noncommital about his future. McGregor is expected back at the end of the year or beginning of next year. He’s still the money fight, and where the UFC is concerned, that’s what matters.

“It would be a massive fight and it’s absolutely possible, yes,” White said of a Khabib-McGregor rematch. “I think McGregor is gonna come back at the beginning of next year. So, realistically, all these guys are looking at September to see what happens with Khabib and Poirier. After that fight plays out, I think there’s gonna be a lot of movement going on.”

Damage

Many have questioned whether it’s actually a good idea for McGregor to fight Khabib again. If he loses it would likely cause irreparable damage to his brand. Some believe though that the UFC would be right to milk their cash cow now before he rides off into the sunset for good.

“To Conor’s credit and defense, you don’t see Conor running around filming movies,” White said. “If you look at his – he’s in great shape, he’s staying in shape, he’s training, and he’s seeing how this thing plays out.”

That’s all we can do.
