The UFC featherweight division is in a weird spot right now, one that we’ve never really seen before with the 145-pound category. The champion Conor McGregor has been caught up in some serious drama with his employers, and it’s leaked out in to the world of boxing now.
A rumoured boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. set the combat sports world on fire last week, and Mayweather himself helped those flames rise by confirming the fight was in talks.
UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub, via LowKickMMA.com, spoke about this superfight between McGregor and Mayweather, even claiming the UFC would allow it:
“So Conor McGregor kinda joked around like ‘Oh, I’m gonna fight Floyd Mayweather,’ well guess what? It’s not that big of a rumour, because Floyd Mayweather was the guy who started those rumours. He actually wants to fight Conor McGregor, not in MMA but boxing and Conor McGregor wants to box him too. Conor didn’t ask for it, Floyd called him out, that’s how big of a star he is.”
“But there’s a lot of upside to it though, you are talking about the biggest draw in the UFC against the biggest draw in boxing. You are looking at least at a 200 million dollar pay day, and you are fighting a guy who is 147 pounds. Yeah, you’re not gonna touch (Floyd), but just name someone, I’d fight ten of them for 200 million dollars. I agree (Conor will get knocked out) but still, it wouldn’t ruin your career, it would f*ck the argument for boxing vs. MMA and who’s better, but he could still go back to MMA and dominate. It would actually make him a bigger star.”
“I guarantee Dana White would sign Conor out and let him do this fight”
