8. Patrick Smith
Patrick Smith was one of the favourites heading into UFC 1. He shouldn’t of been, but he was. We knew so little about how different martial arts compared at that time that many believed kickboxers would have the advantage over grapplers. Not the case. Ken Shamrock submitted Smith in under two minutes in his first fight at UFC 1.
Smith got his game together in time for UFC 2 however, and demonstrated his new skills in his first bout by choking out Ray Wizard in under a minute. He would fight four times that night, defeating Scott Morris in 30 seconds the next round and choking out Johnny Rhodes in a little over a minute the next.
UFC 2 was a 16-man tournament however, which means 3 wins only got him to the finals. Royce Gracie proved too much for him, and Smith submitted to punches at 1:17 in the finals. 4 fights, but only 3 minutes and 52 seconds of action.
