Even before he became the popular referee, McCarthy was already taking care of business by handling tough guys as a Los Angeles police officer. Following in the footsteps of his father Ronald, who was a police officer for three decades, McCarthy served for the LAPD until 2007.
He is formerly a Tactical and Self-Defense Instructor at the Los Angeles Police Academy as well as founder of C.O.M.M.A.N.D. — a training and certification school for MMA referees and judges.
From handling the world’s best fighters to taking out the trash with Los Angeles’ baddest criminals, McCarthy can do it all. It makes perfect sense why he is considered such a badass.
