#1 How He Got His Moniker
Although he stands at a towering 6’4” and walks around near 300-pounds, the nickname “Big John” came about not because of his size, but because of how he manhandled one of the UFC’s co-founders.
The nickname was given to him by UFC promoter Art Davie after an incident which involved McCarthy forcibly lifting Davie off the ground with his bare hands, holding him in the air effortlessly.
Due to his immense height and size, McCarthy is also much larger than most of the fighters he officiates for.
