4. His 2-Finger Salute

It is common for MMA referees flash their own signature hand signal at the camera before big fights. For the most part referees tend to keep this simple, and on the surface Herb Dean’s signature salute is the simplest of all.

The story behind his salute is that just after MMA was regulated in California, one of the state’s athletic commissions inspectors’ daughter was battling a brain tumour. The daughter asked Herb to touch his head where her tumour was and since then he has adopted it as his signature pre-fight salute.
