With news heavily circulating that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is returning to the Octagon before the end of the year to take on current champion Amanda Nunes, a lot of fans have condemned the announcement.

Many feel that Rousey does not deserve an immediate title shot after being gone for so long. The last time she was in the cage, Rousey was brutally knocked out by Holly Holm. That was nearly a year ago at UFC 193 and Rousey has rarely been seen out since.

UFC analyst Ariel Helwani tweeted that the fight is close to being finalized, and perhaps could be a done deal within the week, with an announcement not too far behind.

Cage Rust Could Play A Factor

Rousey has not been in the Octagon in almost a year. In addition to that, she has rarely been seen, if ever, out and about. In fact, Rousey has made it a point to avoid any exposure whatsoever.

The most of what we have heard from her for a year has come from UFC President Dana White, who has kept in close contact with Rousey but has maintained that the former undefeated fighter was not yet ready to make a comeback.

Cage rust is a real thing and fighters need to keep active to stay sharp. That’s the reason why guys like Donald Cerrone and Conor McGregor like to fight often, so they can keep that mental and physical sharpness that gets lost with time away from competition.

With just a little under a year absence, Rousey is susceptible to cage rust. And you don’t want to go into a title shot with cage rust. Things won’t end well.
