Mayweather knows beating Conor won’t be easy…
There are many who believe Conor McGregor doesn’t have a chance at beating Floyd Mayweather. To some, the idea of an MMA fighter beating an elite level boxer at their own game is simply not plausible. Floyd Mayweather is not one of those people however.
Recently, reporters caught up with Floyd, who admitted Conor is capable of beating him in a boxing match. The words, as one might expect, have come as a shock to many.
Can Conor Beat Floyd?
We’ve seen boxers versus MMA fighters before. First we had Ray Mercer versus Tim Sylvia in 2009. The bout was technically contested under MMA rules, but since it only took 9 seconds, and one punch, that’s sort of a moot point. Sylvia tried to stand-up with Mercer and was out-classed. Then James Toney tried to do MMA, and was made to look silly by Randy Couture.
What makes this potential match-up different however, is that Conor McGregor is not Tim Sylvia. He’s also not James Toney. He has the power to knock Floyd out. The catch is that Floyd is so elusive Conor might never touch him. .
On the other hand, Floyd does not have the ability to knock Conor out. His hands are too busted up and he doesn’t have the power. Conor will have the entire bout to try and get to him just once.
Floyd Mayweather on Boxing vs. MMA
“I respect MMA, that’s one thing I do. You can’t disrespect MMA, you have to respect it”
Floyd was asked if he thought boxing was superior to MMA. His answer was interesting. He didn’t compare the two sports in terms of their competitiveness, but rather how much money you can make in one versus the other.
“I’ve never seen an MMA fighter make $300 million in one night. I’ve never seen an mma fighter make 100 million in a night.”
Conor McGregor is the highest grossing MMA athlete of all time. His net worth is only estimated at $22 million. Granted, he hasn’t been active very long. All the same, he’s taken the UFC to PPV heights like nobody ever before him… and he’s only got $22 million?
Floyd Mayweather’s net worth is estimated at $250 million. Conor’s not even 1/10th of the way to Mayweather money. According to Floyd, if Conor sticks to MMA, he’ll never get there.
“Me, myself, I was just very very smart with my career. Extremely smart with my career.” – Floyd, on his feelings towards how he handled his career.
Floyd Admits Conor Can Beat Him
“I’m 40 years old now, I’m a lot older, and he’s still in his 20s. I’m in my 40s now. That can play a major key, and he’s a heavy hitter, so we’ll see.”
Showtime Sports Vice-President, Stephen Espinoza, told reporters recently he believes talks between Floyd’s camp and the UFC are largely at a standstill. According to Espinoza, the UFC is afraid Conor will never return to the promotion following the bout.
If Conor does make $100 million in one night for facing Floyd, he may simply decide to retire.
