With Israel Adesanya moving up to fight Jan Blachowicz, it seems that UFC is working on making an interim title fight. Although there is no argument that Robert Whittaker is the first in line on who deserves to fight for the title. This is what Paulo Costa is pushing in his social media since a win will propel will to another rematch with the current champion.

Paulo Costa’s social media consists of him calling Robert Whittaker to fight him but some reports say that Whittaker is not interested since he thinks that his next logical opponent would be a rematch with Israel Adesanya. Whittaker deserves it since he is on a three-fight win streak. His last win was against a scary knockout puncher, Jared Cannonier.
Everyone would agree that Costa needs a few wins to get back in the title contention. His last fight was for the title but lost. It was not like it was even a close fight against Adesanya, he had no answer to Adesanya and may have not even landed a punch the whole fight. So to call for an immediate title shot after losing badly is not deserving.
Costa’s only fought two ranked contenders in the UFC which was Uriah Hall and Yoel Romero. Meanwhile, Robert Whittaker’s run to the title may have been one of the most impressive. He has beaten Romero twice, Souza, Brunson, Till, and lastly Cannonier. His path to the title was “paid in full”.
It would be wise for Whittaker to wait out Adesanya instead of fighting a dangerous Paulo Costa that may risk his guaranteed title shot. No other fighter has a better case for the title shot since he already beat Cannonier.
One could also make the argument that had Jared Cannonier won the fight, he would have gotten the title shot. Even Adesanya called Cannonier the “Dark Horse” of the division and an impressive would have Adesanya’s interests for the title fight. Unfortunately, Whittaker had a different plan and beat Cannonier decisively.
