World Champion Gervonta Davis Targets His Promoter and Mentor Floyd Mayweather in Not-So-Subtle Instagram Post…
Floyd Mayweather has a history of annoying his fighters and that doesn’t look like ending anytime soon. It seems like his best young protege, double world champion Gervonta Davis is not happy with his promoter and mentor. The pair has fallen out before and now it looks like they’re back at it again.
Gervonta Davis is the current WBC super featherweight champion. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, he’s had rifts with ‘Money’ in the past because he’s refused to move to the unbeaten boxer’s base in Las Vegas.
You have to wonder if it’s really good business for Mayweather to irritate his fighters like this, but hey, the man is a billionaire and I’m not, so let’s not question that much. Davis is the second fighter in recent weeks, after Josue Vargas, to target their promoter on Instagram.
Davis appears to be unhappy with Mayweather because he’s been forced into taking fights he didn’t want in the past. He’s responded to fans questioning when his contract is up, with the words, “yeah me too.” It’s clear that there’s trouble on the horizon. He wrote on Instagram:
“Last year I was forced into fighting for the IBF title but I believed in myself and the heart I have I can overcome anything and I did it by myself! This time around I’m more focus and ready to show the people I’m here to stay& I’m still doing it by myself so please don’t get to faking… See Y’all in a couple of weeks!! I’m ready”
The IBF title that Davis mentions is the one he was stripped of in 2017, against Francisco Fonesca, because he weighed in two pounds over the limit. If he wasn’t happy to fight for the belt and Mayweather effectively forced him to, it’s no wonder that he isn’t happy.
The young boxer has a superb unbeaten record of 20-0, with 19 wins coming by knockout. He’s truly an elite prospect and there is tentative interest in him fighting Vitaly Lomachenko.
The UFC will definitely be watching this with interest. If Davis’s relationship with Mayweather can’t be prepared you can bet that they’ll be ready to leap in with an offer. Dana White has made it very clear that they’re looking for marquee names to represent WME-IMG’s Zuffa Boxing.
They’ve already been heavily linked to Mikey Garcia, who is expected to be next in line to face the incredibly talented Lomachenko. There has yet to be any notable conclusion to those negotiations. It will be interesting to see if this situation between Davis and Mayweather escalates.
