File This Under Never Going to Happen: Georges St. Pierre’s Coach Wants Him to Fight Floyd Mayweather…

He is one of the great UFC fighters of all time, and certainly the most successful welterweight champion the promotion has ever had on its roster. Georges St. Pierre is a different breed of athlete to most UFC fighters, with a single-minded dedication to developing as a martial artist.

In November 2017, he made his comeback after a 4-year hiatus. This time he moved up a weight class to fight Michael Bisping for the middleweight championship of the world. He beat the Count by submission, becoming one of only a handful of two-weight champions in the UFC’s history.

Since then he’s been out of action. He vacated the title due to injury and illness but looks set to fight at least one more time. Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagamedov have been named as potential opponents, but now his coach Firas Zahabi has thrown another name out there. Don’t laugh too hard: Floyd Mayweather.

Money Fight

There is about as much chance of me fighting ‘Money’ as there is of ‘Rush’ taking on the retired boxing legend. We’re talking about a different class of boxer here. It’s realistically never going to happen, but Zababi was adamant that it made sense. He told Joe Rogan:

“I want Georges to fight Mayweather. I keep bothering Georges ‘you fight Mayweather, you fight him’. He’s like ‘it’s crazy’. I know it’s crazy. They’ll fight at a catch weight. Do you think Mayweather is worried about being concussed? He’s fought all the top punchers in the world.”

Zahabi is one of the world’s great coaches, so surely he must know that this is just insanity? The main reason why this isn’t going to happen is that St. Pierre is no longer a big enough draw outside of the MMA world. The sole reason the Conor McGregor boxing match happened, was because the ‘Notorious’ talked himself into it. ‘Rush’ doesn’t have that ability.

Catchweight

St. Pierre’s coach also addressed the glaring weight issues. Mayweather is a much smaller fighter than St. Pierre. There seems very little for either fighter to gain from such a match-up. Also, ‘Rush’ isn’t a boxer. His combination of karate and BJJ made him extremely effective, but could he really go hand-to-hand with a defensive boxer like ‘Money’?

“He’s just going to have to worry about Georges’ volume and reach but he can handle himself and Georges can handle himself,” Zahabi said. “But the whole world is going to tune into that one. I’m like ‘Georges do it’ but Georges doesn’t want to fight a smaller guy, doesn’t want to call out a smaller guy. So it’s going to have to come from Mayweather. It’s going to have to come from him.”

Newsflash: it’s never going to come from Mayweather. This is absolutely deluded.

Return Fight

The UFC was actively pushing for St. Pierre to fight Nate Diaz, a much more realistic prospect. However, St. Pierre has said that he doesn’t want to fight the younger Diaz brother because he’ll look like a bully. Isn’t that sweet of him?

Whatever is going to happen it will not be Floyd Mayweather vs Georges St. Pierre. It just will not. How to kill a story by ScrapDigest. You can watch the full interview above.
