Georges St. Pierre Believes That Nick Diaz Has Wasted the Best Years of His Talent And Could Have Been A Welterweight Champion… Is He Right?

As one of the best fighters to ever step into an MMA cage, anything that Georges St. Pierre says carries a bit of weight behind it. The former welterweight and middleweight champion is widely regarded as the greatest of all-time. Currently, he is retired, although he has been called out by lightweight king Khabib Nurmagamedov.

At the moment though, St. Pierre seems to be happily retired. He has nothing to prove unless the UFC is willing to give him a chance to enhance his legacy in a clash against Khabib. Right now, that seems unlikely, but you never know in the world of MMA.

However, St. Pierre has been willing to give his thoughts about another matter. Nate Diaz is in the news a lot these days and he answered questions on Fansided about his upcoming fight with Jorge Masvidal. GSP also gave his fascinating thoughts about the situation of Nate’s older brother Nick. He believes that the elder Diaz could have beaten Tyron Woodley. What do you think?

Can’t Wait

Nate Diaz v Jorge Masvidal is turning into the most eagerly anticipated fights of the year. The prize at stake is a one-off ceremonial title: the BMF Belt. The pair are going to headline UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden in November. It’s rare that non-title fights headline pay-per-views, but these are just so crazy that fans love them. Even St. Pierre is going to watch it, despite rarely tuning into fights these days.

“I don’t watch fights as much as I did before, but this is going to be one that I’m going to tune into,” said St-Pierre. “What makes it interesting is the character of these fighters.”

Waste of Talent

The Canadian legend also believes that it’s sad that Nate’s older brother Nick hasn’t fought for so long. Nick’s last fight was back in 2015 against Anderson Silva. He was suspended after testing positive for marijuana. In conclusion, his ridiculous suspension made him fall out of love with the game. Since then, he’s been concentrating on his businesses and partying.

“I think just it’s sad to see a guy like him waste his best years,” St-Pierre said. “I think he could have been champion, especially when Woodley was there. Stylistically it would have been a nightmare for a guy like Tyron Woodley.”

Who Knows

That’s definitely an interesting perspective, however, unfortunately, it seems like we’ll never know. Unless Diaz decides to come out of retirement to prove us wrong. Sadly, it seems like that ship has sailed. ‘GSP’ has nothing but respect for the former Strikeforce champion though. He said:

“He’s one of the best fighters that I fought. Who knows, maybe his best years are to come.”

The crazy world of MMA could definitely do with a few more fighters like Nick Diaz. His personality is so appealing to fans, who love the way he keeps it real.
