Khabib Nurmagamedov ‘Hopes’ to Fight Tony Ferguson

Khabib Nurmagamedov Has Offered Words of Support to Tony Ferguson And Has Even Said That He Hopes to Fight ‘El Cucuy’ One Day Soon…

It’s the match-up that we’ve never got, despite being booked an incredible four times. And it looks like it could be 2020 before it happens – if it ever does. Khabib Nurmagamedov v Tony Ferguson is the fight all proper MMA fans want, but it appears to be cursed.

They’re the two most exciting fighters in the division. Current lightweight champion Khabib has an incredible record of 27-0. Meanwhile, Ferguson – a former interim title holder – is currently riding a ridiculous 11-fight win streak at 155lbs, with his latest victory a scintillatingly bloody brawl with Anthony Pettis.

Unfortunately, Ferguson is currently going through some personal issues. He’s been given a restraining order by his wife and the UFC has pledged its support to him right now in this difficult time. Now Khabib Nurmagamedov has joined his fellow professionals in showing support for ‘El Cucuy’ and even reiterated his hope to fight him in the future.

Sympathy

For his part, Khabib has nothing but respect for the man that many believe has the tools to beat him, or at the very least give him a great fight. He told RT Sport:

“From what I understood at least, there were some reports about calls to the police, I really don’t want to go into details. Because I myself wouldn’t want to have that sort of attention.

“I can only imagine how hard it is for him, especially since it’s about his family. Again, I didn’t follow it closely, just like like you I read some things on the internet. May God give him health and the best of luck. Sport is sport, but family is family. And let’s hope he’ll return, it’s very strange to see him away, he has an 11-fight win streak in the lightweight division. And now he’s on the sidelines.

Challenge

The champion discussed the psychological pressures of being in the spotlight. He discussed how many fighters struggle with it, and that everybody faces a different challenge. He said:

“I guess that just means that at this moment in time he has to go through this test. Each person faces their own challenge, some people get ill, some people let money go to their heads, some people drink. Someone has ‘star fever. Different people face tests in different ways. Someone had a surgery, someone is a champion who doesn’t have time for training. So each person faces their own challenge and it looks like he will have to go through his own challenge. Let’s hope he’ll come out as a winner and come back, and hopefully we’ll fight one day.”

Optimistic

Khabib is optimistic that the pair will one day finally cross paths. They are the two best fighters on the roster. However, time is not on Ferguson’s side and it would be a shame if it never happened. Many diehard fans consider it one of the most exciting potential match-ups on the roster.

“Yes, it’s a great fight,” Nurmagomedov said. “It’s one of the best… Not even one of the best, it’s the most anticipated fight in the UFC. I’ve been told about it by the UFC owners because they monitor what people say on the internet. And this is the most anticipated fight at the moments. So let’s hope he comes back.”
