A long awaited rematch between UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and his rival Dan Henderson is finally happening. After ‘The Count’ won a riveting first round knockout over Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, a stream of challenges flooded in.
Former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre wanted a piece of the action, Anderson Silva and Rockhold both demanded rematches, Chris Weidman, Yoel Romero and Jacare Souza all chimed in too.
But the savage beating that Henderson put on Bisping at the historic UFC 100 card in 2009 has spurred the Englishman’s recent trash talk. He accused Hendo of being a ‘cheating old bastard,’ pointing out the former Pride FC champion’s use of T (testosterone replacement therapy).
Henderson replied by stating he’d knockout his old foe again and then retire as UFC champion. At 45 years of age, it certainly is a last ditch effort for the highly decorated wrestler-turned knockout artist.
As reported by Globo:
Dan Henderson’s campaign to fight for the middleweight belt against Michael Bisping , current champion of the division , worked. The duel , which still has no defined location , however, will take place in October, is agreed verbally , discovered by Combate.com , on Friday.
The official announcement will come out in the coming weeks , as well as the signing of contracts . If Hendo is confirmed as the next challenger , he will leave behind Ronaldo Jacare – the third in the ranking category – and Anderson Silva, former owner of the belt and defeated the English in February, who longed for the chance.
So the rematch takes place, and the number 13 ranked Henderson jumps a long line of worthy and hungry contenders. That title mix includes three former champions and many who arguably have a better shout than Hendo.
What a difference a feud makes!
