The first fighter to give Conor McGregor his first UFC loss, Nate Diaz has posted a tweet regarding the main-event. He said that the contenders in the lightweight division always ends in a stoppage. He was the first to submit McGregor in a short notice fight back in UFC 196.

McGregor demanded an immediate rematch against Diaz to avenge his loss. The UFC obviously granted and Diaz accepted as well. It was Diaz’s biggest fight purse. The fight was one of the greatest fights to watch, in the first half it was all McGregor but in the later rounds Diaz just kept coming forward against a gassed McGregor.

Conor McGregor was declared the winner via majority decision. In an interview, Diaz wanted to have another match for a trilogy fight as he granted McGregor the rematch and the fight was really close.

The UFC moved on eventually and gave McGregor a title shot in the lightweight division against Eddie Alvarez. McGregor gave one of the most flawless title shot performance in UFC history. Meanwhile, Diaz just wanted to fight McGregor and refused to fight anyone else.

Originally Diaz was scheduled to face Dustin Poirier but was canceled, Diaz eventually moved on and fought Anthony Pettis and won via dominantly. He then went on to fight Jorge Masvidal for the BMF belt but lost via doctor stoppage. Since then he has not fought any top contenders.

There are some indications that he will be moving back down to lightweight, in order to try and fight Conor McGregor. Now that McGregor lost to Poirier, he now wants to face Poirier since they were originally scheduled in the past. Poirier also has interest in fighting Diaz after his win against McGregor.

Coming off a loss against Masvidal in the welterweight division, it does not make sense to fight the top 1 lightweight in the UFC. Justin Gaethje, who was Khabib’s last opponent also thought of joining the feud.

There are a lot of contenders more worthy to fight Poirier, names like Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler are more deserving but it is still possible that UFC is going to push the household names of the organization.
