1. Matt Serra vs. Georges St. Pierre UFC 69

Matt Serra lost more fight in the UFC than he won, but that’s not what people think of when his name is mentioned. The biggest upset in UFC history was when Matt Serra knocked out Georges St. Pierre at UFC 69.

The only reasons Serra was even given the title opportunity was because he won Season 4 of the Ultimate Fighter. With the series needing a new spin on things, TUF4 consisted of only fighters who had UFC experience but hadn’t been overly successful. The winning fighter would receive a title opportunity and a multi-fight contract.

Serra only had a 4W-4L record in the UFC heading into the season, but he beat Chris Lytle via split-decision to win the season and earn the shot at GSP.

Coming into the fight the most chance anyone would give Serra was to say that “he has a puncher’s chance”. As in Serra’s best strategy might just be to close his eyes and throw his fists. Well Serra connected with those fists and won himself the UFC welterweight championship.

He would lose the rematch decisively, then drop 2 of his next 3 before calling it a career. He now coaches fighters along with Ray Longo, in New Jersey. The Longo-Serra fight team includes Chris Weidman, Al Iaquinta, and Aljamain Sterling. He also hosts the UFC podcast along with comedian Jim Norton.
