Ben Askren is Having None of Conor McGregor’s Claims That ONE is to Blame for the UFC Closing Down the UFC Flyweight Division… And He’s Just Burnt Conor McGregor in Devastating Style…

As you may have heard, the UFC is moving to officially close the UFC flyweight division. Demetrious Johnson has already left for pastures new, while incumbent champion Henry Cejudo will be offered a title shot against bantamweight king TJ Dillashaw.

The majority of the division’s fighters will be cut, while a few will be invited to move up a weight class. Many fighters have already learnt of their fate, in one of the most controversial moves by the UFC in recent years. ONE Championship is expected to be the main beneficiary of the UFC’s decision.

Conor McGregor released a bizarre tweet targeting the president of ONE, Chatri Sityodtong for his alleged greed. Now former ONE welterweight champion and recent UFC signing Ben Askren has responded to the Irishman, shredding him mercilessly.

McGregor must be drinking way too much of his Proper 12 because this is just one of his most bizarre opinions ever. He wrote a message directly to Chatri Sityodtong saying:

“You must now take all the 124lbers that have been let go, Chatri. You talk all of this Martial Art and respect talk, yet your greed has directly cost more than half a fighting division it’s chance to earn income for their family. Have respect @YODCHATRI. Sign the division.”

It’s utterly ludicrous to claim that ONE is to blame because the UFC doesn’t fancy its flyweights, refuses to try and promote them, and because mainstream western audiences just aren’t that interested. Needless to say, the Twitter response has been devastatingly ruthless.

Ask Askren

Ben Askren knows both Dana White and Chatri Sityodtong personally, have been the ONE welterweight champion and recently transferred to the UFC in exchange for Demetrious Johnson. He immediately took to Twitter to admonish McGregor for his simply idiotic opinion. He tweeted:

“When did @TheNotoriousMMA become a social justice warrior??? None of his antics have ever cost anyone a paycheck (emoji)”

Obviously, Askren is referring to UFC 223, when five fighters found themselves affected by his antics. Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg were injured by broken glass, leaving Brandon Moreno without an opponent. Alex Caceres v the GOAT Artem Lobov was also scrapped. Oh, and Borg is a flyweight with a sick child, who hasn’t been able to fight since. Askren has made a good point.

ONE is a breath of fresh air into an MMA market that has been so long monopolized by the UFC. They have an excellent roster, all their fights are free to watch on their downloadable app, and they’re making waves in the East with several exciting signings including Eddie Alvarez and new vice-president Miesha Tate. Sage Northcutt is also being courted by the promotion. Sityodtong has criticised Conor McGregor in the past, telling CNN:

“If Conor McGregor was a free agent, ONE Championship would not try to sign him. We don’t want somebody to swear at people, throw water bottles, disrespect people, call out people’s wives and children, and – in my opinion – other distasteful stuff that is not representative of true martial arts.”

Well, there you go. It doesn’t look like McGregor will be jumping ship anytime soon. It’s too far to climb down from Uncle Dana’s knee.
