Anthony Johnson vs. Glover Teixeira

Salvador Sanchez

I really like Anthony Johnson in this fight with Glover Teixeira. The heavy handed former title challengers both have their own qualities, but I think it’s ‘Rumble’s’ hands that will win this co-main event.

This isn’t to say that Teixeira is not a quality fighter, but more that I believe no man in this division is invincible. Johnson’s game is so devastating when he’s on point that maybe only Daniel Cormier and a few others can withstand his power.

Johnson by knockout in round 1.

This fight comes down entirely to whether Johnson can knockout out Teixeira early or not. The later this fight goes, the better it is for Teixeira, even though Rumble is the younger fighter.
Since re-debuting in the UFC (and doing so at light heavyweight) Johnson has knocked out 4 of his 6 opponents, with 3 of those KOs coming in the 1st round and the other 28 seconds into the 2nd.
Working against Johnson is that he’s facing a guy who has only been knocked out once in his career, and that was in his 1st ever fight 14 years ago.
Despite this I still feel Johnson is going to be able to KO Glover, but if the fight goes even a minute or two into the 2nd round expect Teixeira to turn the tides and earn a submission win.

In Anthony Johnson versus Glover Teixeira, fans get a high-level striking battle that will not reach the cards. One one hand Teixeira possesses world-class BJJ skills that pay the bills, which oddly enough, we haven’t seen too much of in the Octagon. On the other, Johnson has amazing takedown defense and I don’t see Teixeira getting the drop on Johnson so we should see a fight with both men standing all throughout.
Both guys are big-time punchers and it will all come down to either who can take more punishment, or who can get there first. In this regard, I will have to go with Anthony Johnson.
In all honesty, it’s a pretty even fight. One thing’s for sure though, it’s going to be an absolute treat — most of these guys’ fights are anyways so you can’t go wrong. I just feel like Johnson has a lot more going for him than Teixeira, and that’s really just nitpicking because Teixeira is an amazing fighter. It’s a 55-45 ordeal for me and I am leaning towards slightly picking Anthony Johnson to win by stoppage in the second round.
Pick: Anthony Johnson by TKO early in the second
