Randy Brown already has a list of future fighters he wants to face next, which includes Stephen Thompson. And for him, he could even serve as the backup of the Kevin Holland vs. Michael Page bout next month at UFC 299.
Brown just won his last bout at UFC Fight Night 235 last weekend when he defeated Muslim Salikhov via a first-round knockout. Yet, it seems the fighter is already looking for a fight. In his recent interview on The Anik & Florian Podcast, the fighter expressed interest in joining UFC 299. In the event, Page will be making his UFC debut after working for Bellator for years, and facing him or Holland is something Brown would like to do. The promotion only looks for backups for title fights, but Brown said he would not say no if he is offered the position.
“I’m here… 100% I can be that guy,” Brown said. “Honestly, even if they need a backup for the fight [between Page and Holland], whatever. I know they typically don’t do that, only for title fights, but I’m here, I’m that guy, and honestly, winner or loser, I’m here, you know.”
Needless to say, Brown is looking for an entrance into the division, and Thompson could be one of his tickets for that. “Wonderboy” just lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 296 last December. Nonetheless, the fighter remains in the pleasing No. 7 spot of the class weight, making him an attractive opponent for those wanting to move up the ranking.
“Even a guy like ‘Wonderboy,’ I think, would be a good match-up, you know,” said Brown, adding he has something to offer in the division. “I think just stylistically, I make things really interesting with me in the mix there.”
The three fighters join Brown’s list after he made an earlier callout to Michael Chiesa, who is also in the welterweight ranking. In his callout, the 33-year-old pointed out that “Maverick” was “one of the guys that don’t fight enough” and stressed that the fellow UFC fighter has “ to do something to prove you belong in that spot.”
