UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is an interesting anomaly. He fought his way to the top of the 145-pound division in record time. McGregor pasted the reigning champ Jose Aldo with a single punch, but then things got a little weird.

In an unprecedented move, before defending the title he’d just won, McGregor jumped up a record two weight classes. It was never intended to be that way though, as the Irish star was originally meant to fight Rafael dos Anjos.

After dos Anjos pulled out of UFC 196 with an injury, Nate Diaz was drafted in but would only fight at welterweight. McGregor agreed to Diaz’s terms, in what turned out to be a very ill fated fight for ‘The Notorious.’

McGregor was bashed and choked in to submission in the second round against Diaz. The bad boy from Stockton, CA had managed to topple the surging star on just 11 days notice. The MMA world loved it.

With the unexpected move to 170 pounds came a number of strange stories. Firstly McGregor was linked to a title fight with Robbie Lawler if he were to beat Diaz. Then came Diaz’s revelations of the UFC’s plans for McGregor vs. Georges St-Pierre.
