3. Yoel Romero vs. Jacare Souza UFC 194

Yoel Romero is the Cuban Brock Lesnar. He is 39, jacked to the gills, and recently flunked a drug test.

Romero failed an out-of-competition drug test shortly after his UFC 194 victory over Jacare Souza. As a result everyone assumed Romero would be suspended for 2 years, and essentially removed from middleweight title completion. What nobody initially put together however, was that Romero’s victory over Souza would not be over-turned, and the high-ranked middleweight would be back far sooner than most expected.

Yoel Romero’s camp claimed “tainted supplement” and shocked a lot of people when they were able to provide the supplement that produced the failed drug test. USADA investigators were able to determine that this supplement would cause the failed drug test and that Romero was not to blame for the failed test. The result was his 2 year suspension was reduced to 6 months. Now he has been reinstated but does not have a scheduled bout upcoming.

Controversially many in the MMA media have voted for Jacare Souza to be ranked #3 in the middleweight division, and Romero #4, even though Romero beat Souza. While you can argue that Romero should have had his victory over-turned, the fact remains that he didn’t, so ranking him below a guy he just beat is ridiculous.
