1. Brock Lesnar – UFC 91
Brock Lesnar receiving a title shot at UFC 91 was possibly the first time MMA fans openly complained about a fighter receiving favouritism due to the PPV buyrates they bring in.
Lesnar had only fought 3x times professionally heading into the bout, and one of those was a submission loss to Frank Mir in under 2 minutes. Still, Lesnar nearly punched a hole through Heath Herrig’s face at UFC 87, ending the big man’s career.
Dana White’s actual motivation for giving Lesnar a title shot, may have been more to stick it to champion Randy Couture however. Couture and the UFC had been involved in a legal dispute for more than a year at the time, as Couture tried to leave the UFC to face Fedor Emelianenko in another promotion.
Lesnar is said to have outweighed Couture by 60lbs in this fight. He knocked him out in the 2nd round.
