We all remember how Rose Namajunas gave one of the biggest upset win against Joanna Jedrzejczyk, where many thought that Joanna was an invincible champion. Now she shook the world once again by knocking out Chinese star, Zhang Weili.
The fight ended so early that we did not see much of the action. Weili tried to invest early with inside leg kicks but she just got caught with a headkick that knocked her down. Although she was conscious, how she landed and responded with the strikes made the referee stop the fight.
The footwork of Rose Namajunas may have played a huge factor, as it makes it harder for her opponent to hit her. Namajunas also credits her leg kick defense from her fiance, Pat Berry.
This is Weili’s first loss in the UFC, but she still has the potential to recapture the belt once more. Weili just got caught, simple as that. As for Rose, she executed a great gameplan that made Weili thought of she was throwing a legkick but in turn landed a headkick.
During the night of the fight, the UFC was #1 trending in China. The biggest factor was obviously Zhang Weili’s upcoming fight. It may have certainly hurt the UFC’s market in China but it is what it is. There is no guaranteed in the fight game, and anything can happen inside the Octagon.
It is also worth noting that there is another Chinese rising star named Yan Xiaonan. She is also undefeated in the UFC and is scheduled to fight Carla Esparza. Whoever wins the fight, will likely fight for the belt next. The female strawweight division is simply the most stacked female division, mainly because the competition is as tight as it can get.
