Tank Abbott vs. Elaine McCarthy
In the crowd at UFC 8, Tank Abbott confronted Allan Goes, who he believed had been badmouting him in the gym, but UFC officials quickly intervened.
Elaine McCarthy, wife of ‘big’ John McCarthy and an event co-ordinator in the early days of the UFC, told off Abbott’s girlfriend afterwards for encouraging him to fight, which provoked an angry reaction from Tank, who threatened to kill her.
‘Big’ John was furious when he learned of what the fighter had said and warned the UFC owners that he’d quit his job if Tank wasn’t punished.
Abbott was suspended for a year and wrote a letter of apology to McCarthy, which it later emerged had actually been penned by UFC founder Art Davies!
